How to Measure Yourself For Bracelets

One of the hardest things to do as a shopper is decide in the moment if a piece will fit you before you buy it, especially when you can’t try the piece on first! For Necklaces this doesn’t possess too much of a challenge, for the most part. Necklaces, as a general rule should be 16 inches or longer, and usually have a chain extension on them unless they have a toggle closure. But for most designers, changing the size of a necklace is very easily done for a client upon request.

But often with bracelets there is a lot of intricate bead work that has gone into the design that does not allow for a designer to simply make a quick adjustment to the length as easily as most necklaces.

The “standard” length for bracelets is considered to be 7.5 inches. However I hear very frequently from women who have much smaller wrists and a 7.5 inch bracelet would slide right off. They need a bracelet closer to a 7 inch. But I also hear from women on the other side of the fence that have thicker wrists. They need more room to fit comfortably in their jewelry. So it’s an 8 or 8.5 inch bracelet for them.

So how do you tell? A quick way to be able to tell if a bracelet is going to be the right fit for you is to take a dress makers tape measure and wrap just above your wrist bone. Make sure the tape is sitting ABOVE your bone and not on the bone. From here, add 1/4 inch to 1 inch depending on how loose of a fit you’d like for your bracelet. 1/2 inch is the average. If you are unsure, it is best to get a bracelet that has an adjustable chain so that you can play with it until you find you’re preferred length.

If you do not have a tape measure,  a bit of string or thick strip of paper will do just fine. Simply measure out your wrist as above, mark where the pieces meet, lay the paper or string flat and measure the length when flat. That will give you the length. Just remember to add 1/4 to 1 inch to that length depending on how you’d like your jewelry to fit.

You’ll see in my photo that my wrist measures about 6 inches. I usually prefer my jewelry to be between 6.5 and 7 inches, but it depends on the piece.

Happy Beading Everyone!
